I subscribe to the STEAM model along with the STEM model and believe the A is quite necessary for a well-rounded employee. The added A is for Arts, that can be management, leadership, emotional intelligence, and all other soft skills that research proves are necessary to have the kind of results you desire from your leadership and management team.
My experiences with hundreds of leaders and students from around the world has demonstrated that many people have become super talented at Computer Engineering, Software Development and other related STEM types of careers but now are ready to move into a management or leadership role and quickly realize they are not really prepared for that role.
I have also been a higher education leader and corporate training leader for more than three decades and do not believe (first-hand knowledge) Colleges and Universities are always (some are, of course) taking the necessary follow up actions in many cases to prepare people for you to put them right into position where your greatest succession planning needs are, that is where my team and I come into the picture. The education system is not truly set up for that direct follow up. Spend your sacred budget money where it can get the most applicable results, right now. Save money on tuition reimbursement programs.
As a seasoned practitioner, higher ed Professor and advisor/consultant, my professional opinion is as follows: The latest hiring trends are toward people that have the right skills and not necessarily the right college degree (not discounting the value of the necessity of a college degree in many or most cases of course).
Putting the puzzle pieces together just-in-time and getting the appropriate feedback, making corrections with more follow-up feedback is the key here. This is where you and our team come into the picture. Let us help you, help your up-and-coming leaders/managers be ready for the job at hand with their ability to constructively work in teams and with others in the workplace in a positive and healthy manner.
